The HSY-7261 Water Separation Index Tester is used for water separation characteristics, free water and particulate testing (ASTM standard test methods D3948, D7224, D7261, and D4860) (D3948 is included in specifications D1655 and D7566). For quality control purposes, the water separation characteristics of fuels are rated to determine the amount of surface-active substances (surfactants) present. Surfactants can impair the performance of filter separators used to remove water from fuel. The presence of water can harm engine performance and promote microbial growth, leading to tank corrosion and filter clogging in fuel lines. Also for quality control purposes, fuels undergo a "clear and bright" test to determine the content of free water and particulates in middle distillate fuels.
I. Instrument Testing Description
The HSY-7261 Water Separation Index Tester is an electromechanical instrument used to perform four discrete tests. ASTM standard test methods D3948 (jet fuel JET), D7224 (jet fuel), and D7261 (diesel) are used to evaluate water separation characteristics, while D4860 (jet fuel or diesel) detects free water and particulate contaminants and assigns a numerical rating. The instrument can perform each of these four tests using one of the four "six-pack" kits that include the appropriate coalescer unit.
II. Water Separation Characteristics
Test methods D3948, D7224, and D7261 use a turbidimeter, a mechanical mixer, and a disposable coalescing filter based on the 5th edition API certified media. A portion of the sample in a clear glass vial is used to set the meter reading to 100. The sample in the vial is discarded, and the vial is retained.
Another portion of the sample in a plastic syringe is used to create a water/fuel emulsion via the mixer. The emulsion is passed through the filter at a set rate, and a portion is collected in the retained vial. The vial is placed back into the turbidimeter, and the water separation characteristics of the fuel are rated.
The obtained value is compared to the untreated sample used to set the meter to 100. The higher the rating (with 100 being the maximum), the fewer surfactants are present.
III. Free Water and Particulate Contamination (Clear and Bright)
Test method D4860 passes a portion of the sample through a filter medium, which is then collected in a clear glass bottle. The vial is placed in the turbidimeter, and the meter is adjusted to 100. The treated fuel is discarded, and a portion of untreated fuel is placed into the vial, which is then reinserted into the turbidimeter. The higher the rating (maximum 100), the less free water and particulates are present.
IV. "Six-Pack" Test Consumables, Including Coalescer Cells
A box commonly referred to as a "six-pack" is shown, containing six test kits. Each test kit includes vacuum-sealed consumables for performing a single test. Each coalescer/filter is labeled to identify the fuel type and the applicable ASTM method to be used. Each six-pack also includes a container of distilled water for performing water separation tests.
